A Fashionable Cup of Joe

With the age of Starbuck's, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and many multiple "fast-food"-like coffee shops, I have been tormented in finding a great cup of Joe or espresso here in the states.

During my international travels I have been spoiled somewhat by the amazing lattes and espressos, and have inadvertently evolved into a minor coffee snob.  So my goal was to find some great cafe's or coffee joints where patrons can enjoy the actual robust flavor of the coffee bean itself, rather than sipping on liquid dessert pumped full of flavored syrup.

One of the hardest places for me to find great coffee on the west coast was Los Angeles.  However, hipsters and coffee fanatics are quickly changing that.  So far I have really enjoyed the flavor of Urth Cafe's latte.  There are locations in West Hollywood and Santa Monica.  There is also Javatinis in Seal Beach off main street that doesn't fair too bad also.

Now, as a resident of the awesome city San Francisco, my choices for great coffee are definitely more abundant.  There's Four Barrel in the Mission District off of Valencia between 14th and 15th.  There is no huge sign outside, but the smell of roasting beans and the display of Mission Hipsters in the window can guarantee you've found the place.  I also really like Trouble coffee in the Sunset off Judah between 46th and 45th.  Their sizes are more standard with cafes overseas and the coffee is kept simple but absolutely delicious.

If you're that unfortunate person, who does not live nearby any of these great establishments, then there's always Peet's Coffee & Tea.  I normally don't like franchised or corporate coffee chains, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of their espresso drinks and brewed coffee.  You can find a location near you if you just head to their website.  Don't worry...you should be able to find at least one location close to you, and if you cant...i'd move ;)

Depeche "a la" Mode

Okay, so its that weird transition from summer to fall phase, but it's still warm enough to wear my new Metal and Mesh dress that I purchased from Nasty Gal.  It definitely gets frosty at night here in San Francisco, so I paired it with my used/ vintage coat that I got from Buffalo Exchange in the Haight.  I threw on some charcoal knit over-the-knees and black ankle boots to complete my style.  Thought i'd wear my hot pink shades to add a pop of color...they're fresh :)

I love the metallic details of the collar...it's edgy yet elegant, and adds a nice boost of contrast against the all black dress.  My vintage coat that I purchased has puffed shoulders and a great draped back to it.  I think it softens the industrial look of the dress and adds a nice touch of color.  Don't be afraid to use color.  Its great seeing how colors "befriend" and contrast with one another.  I didn't want to play it safe and use all black or neutral pieces.  All black is for mourning....i'm quite happy on the contrary xx

Best Recent Import from "Down Unda": The Temper Trap

source: The Temper Trap Official Website

Melodic vocals, heavenly organs, and gradual percussion build-ups describe The Temper Trap's musical style.  Not only do they have a unique sound and look, but they hail from the great down under: Australia.  During my year spent living in Sydney, I was hastily introduced to this rapidly growing Aussie favorite and quickly hopped on the wagon.  Now, I'm riding that wagon a full-fledged fan.

I had the pleasure of seeing these men play at both Coachella and Outside Lands this year...and let me tell you, they did not disappoint.  A.  they always know how to work the crowd  B.  their sound and energy are on par  C.  they are so adorable and cute, how could you not love 'em?...Especially with those cute Aussie accents and hot style.

A couple of my favorite tracks are "Fader," "Love Lost," and of course our 500 Days of Summer favorite "Sweet Disposition."  You can learn more about them and check out when they'll be performing near you at the official site here.  Until then, here's their "Fader" video for you newbies who would like an introduction and perhaps become "trapped" (you like that clever one?) by The Temper Traps themselves:

Rumble in the Park!

Hey guys.  Sorry I haven't been the best at keeping up with my daily topics...why?  I am moving back up to the raddest city called San Francisco and have been a little pre-occupied with things.  I love my new ocean view flat a block from the beach and a few blocks from Golden Gate Park, which is actually hosting one of the best musical festivals this month; Outside Lands Festival!

Its a 2-day hoopla of art, food, wine and music (Damien Marley, Kings of Leon, Phoenix, Empire of The Sun...just to name a few).  You can purchase tickets on the website for both days or single day tickets.

The fabulous line-up and guarantee of booze (wine) pretty much solidifies your chances of a great time!  So with that squared away, let's figure out what you'll be rockin' to the festivities!

Given San Francisco's colorful history and culture, a boho and flirty hippie inspired look is the way to go.  Using Jen's Pirate Booty Poncho Villa Ruffle Dress in Natural as my core piece, I wanted to continue with the boho/ hippie vintage theme by pairing it with some 1960's Maddie Moccasins by House of Harlow and a Devoted 2 Vintage tooled leather boho bag.  Add some bangles and earrings with hints of red color to tie in the boots, a pair of aviators (ASOS Peace Heart Arm Aviators), and an oversized hat to protect you from the summer sun and you're good for some SF festivities! :)  Who said you had to wear tie dye to be a hippie...

***For MEN, an old pair of of comfortable blue jeans, a plain white tee and your favorite flannel (unbuttoned) is the way to go!  Add a pair of Converse or Rainbows and some shades and you're good!  Have fun!

Beauty Quickies: Hair

Having a bad hair day?...

I'm a pretty low-maintenance gal, but my hair seems to be the one thing I continuously fuss with.  I have long, straight, and fine hair with a slightly oily complex.  It seems the only time it looks fresh and revived is right after a good cleanse, but washing my hair twice a day or even every day can sometimes dry up my scalp. If a dry scalp isn't the problem, its finding the time to consistently maintain it.  I don't want to have to take the time to wash it if its slightly oily or flat.

What's a good solution?...

Well, at first I used baby powder (yes, the stuff you put on the bums of babies).  I would apply a small amount to my roots to soak up the oil and it worked great.  However, it does leave that distinct baby powder smell and doesn't do a lot for volume.  Then, I heard about other products that work like baby powder, but were primarily geared towards hair care.  Dry shampoo, for instance, is a powder you put into your dull/ dirty hair (similar to baby powder) and it soaks all the oil to make your hair appear cleaner.  Again, its effective and doesn't leave that baby powder odor behind, but still...what about VOLUME?!!

Thanks to my friends over at Daily Candy, I heard about this product Sachajuan Volume Powder, that is a dry shampoo, mousse, volume-izer, and hair spray rolled into one.  Its great for all hair lengths and will maintain that fussy frock in-between washes...hooray!!!
